Frederick William III acquired Paretz Palace in 1797, before he was crowned king. The remote location was intended to provide a refuge from the social demands of the court. The king commissioned the architect David Gilly to build a new Neoclassical country palace. After the Second World War and the subsequent looting, the various uses during the GDR period and following the fall of communism, little of the original furnishings of the palace were left in place, apart from the beautiful wallpaper. In this respect, the appearance of a single chair can be regarded as a minor sensation.
