A rare Empire gueridon with a basket inset

Solid walnut (possibly stained) and walnut and mahogany veneer on softwood. The round, finely woven basket set into a veneered wooden ring supported by three curved legs terminating in anthropomorphic lion's heads and paw feet on a tripod base. With minor losses to the veneer and one open shrinkage crack to the base. H 78.5, D c. 60 cm.
1st quarter 19th C.

Provenance

By repute, the table originates from Berlin. North German private collection.

Cf. Schmitz, Deutsche Möbel des Klassizismus, Stuttgart 1923, p. 171 for a gueridon attributed to E. Spannsail of Stuttgart that was presumably based on Italian models. Cf. also a similar table of square section formerly housed in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg in the toilette room of Tzarina Elisabeth Alexejevna, née Princess of Baden (cat.
