A Berlin KPM porcelain dessert plate with Pyramus and Thisbe

Model no. 1054. The well painted with a motif from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the border with gilded tendrils on purple ground. Blue sceptre mark, iron red dash below, L in red, pressnummer 22, incised III. D 24.8 cm.
1817 - 1821.

In the catalogue of the Hessische Hausstiftung, Markus Miller mentions the design upon which this motif is based – namely a painting by Charles Monnet which was reproduced in an engraving in 1768. KPM is thought to have used this motif to decorate two or perhaps more dessert plates for the generals' services. The plate with this motif housed in the Hessische Hausstiftung was certainly decorated by the same painter, as it bears the same painter's mark.

Provenance

Collection of Renate and Tono Dreßen.
