A 14k gold brooch with a sardonyx cameo

14 kt Gelbgold/Rotgold. The brown and white layered agate cameo carved with a portrait of a bearded older man. The bi-colour gold surround with fine floral engraved decoration. The cameo signed and dated on the reverse “E. Geerts 1886”. 6 x 5 cm. Weight 28.86 g.

The Belgian medal caster Edouard Louis Geerts (Brussels 1826-1889), a student of the sculptor van der Stappen, became known for his portrait medals which he produced, among other occasions, for the opening of the North Sea Canal in honor of William III King of the Netherlands.
