A Dutch mortar with a “house mark”

Golden brown cast bronze with chocolate brown patina. Tapering mortar with a protruding, tiered base. Decorated with several moulded rings, the centre with a band of delicate arabesques, grotesques, and fountain motifs each flanked by demi-figures. Above this three “house marks”, below a broad inscription in Latin capital letters: “THANTIERIN LIERT X X X XI”. A horizontal crack above the base, some scratches and minor abrasions to the patina. H 16, D 18.5 cm, weight c. 6 kg.
Attributed to the Wegewart workshop, Deventer, early 16th C.
