A Dutch mortar from 1599

Yellow gold cast bronze with natural patina (polished). The centre decorated with a band of moulding flanked above and below by scrolling acanthus tendrils, winged grotesques, fountains and cornucopia. The rim with a wide banderole inscribed in Latin capital letters: “LIEFTE VERWINDT AL DINCK Ao 1599”. The handles formed as dolphins. Some calcific deposits to the outer surface, some verdigris to the inner, the base slightly rounded due to use, a concave dent to the rim. H 13.7, D 15.8 cm, weight c. 3.3 kg.
Attributed to Henrick Wegewart sr., Kampen, 1599.
