A Dutch mortar with grotesques

Golden yellow cast bronze with dark brown patina (some slight verdigris in the indentations). The centre decorated with a band of horizontal moulding flanked above and below by acanthus scrolls, winged grotesques, arabesques, fountains and cornucopias. The rim decorated with a broad banderole inscribed in capital letters: “ANTONY WILKES 1657”. With two zoomorphic handles. Minor dents around the rim, some remnants of pigment to the interior. H 13.7, D 15 cm, weight c. 3.5 kg. Includes a corresponding baluster-form pestle with a node. L 22 cm.
