A silver seal made for Cornelis de Boodt

Round seal with a pierced folding handle. Finely engraved with the coat-of-arms of the de Boodt family and inscribed “SIGILL.CORNELII DE BOODT DOMI:DE CADZANT.ET MOERS BERGEN”. Diameter 6.8 cm, weight 203 g.
Southern Netherlands, around 1707, with an unidentified star-shaped mark.

Cornelius de Boodt (1680 – 1720) was born in Sluis to an old family from Bruges who owned many estates from Zeeland to Utrecht, including properties in Cadzand, Giessenburg, and Giess. He purchased Kasteel Moersbergen near Doorn in 1707 and was henceforth known as the Lord of Kadzand and Moersbergen. This seal must have been produced around that time.

Provenance
