Hermann Kauffmann

The Squire and the Cartwright

Oil on panel. 27.9 x 36 cm.
Signed lower right: Herm. Kauffmann.

Born in Hamburg, Hermann Kauffmann received his artistic training and most important impulses at the Munich Academy. He moved back to his home town in 1833, while his son Hugo remained in Bavaria throughout his life. Perceived as a "Hamburg painter," Hermann Kauffmann's naturalistic works were praised and successfully sold throughout northern Germany. One of his favourite pictorial motifs was the country road, upon which - before the dense network of railways covered the country - a large part of everyday life took place. Coming from Hamburg, the roads of Holstein offered the painter with ample motifs for his pictures.
The style and subject of this painting are both comparable to Kauffmann's "Frachtwagen vor einer Holsteiner Schmiede", which is dated 1847 (op. cit. No. 72). Therefore, the date of its creation can be assumed to be around 1846/1850.

Provenance

Deutschte private collection.
