A French marble group with Susanna and the Elders, circa 1700

Marble. This relief depicts Susanna dressed in a cloth, defending herself from the advances of one of the two elders whilst the other stands back and watches. The artist presumably chose this Old Testament scene to demonstrate his mastery as a sculptor: The bodies of the figures are so arranged that the composition fits elegantly into the oval surround, its subtle tiers creating a greater impression of depth.
