Southern Netherlands 2nd quarter 15th century

A Southern Netherlandish carved walnut figure of a saint, second quarter 15th century

Carved in the round, the reverse only partially worked and slightly smoothed down. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A figure of a saint, most likely an apostle, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The missing attribute originally held in his right hand would presumably have served to identify the figure. The sculpture is characterised by the fine carving of the facial features, beard and hair as well as the masterfully rendered interplay of drapery in the cloak and robe.
The right hand lost, the fingers of the left hand presumably partially replaced. Drilled holes on the reverse. Height 44 cm.

Provenance

South German private collection.
