Central Rhine Region Mid-15th century

A mid-15th century carved wood Pietà group, Central Rhine Region

Carved in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse slightly sloping and hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. This devotional piece depicts the Virgin seated on a stone bench holding the body of Her Son, dressed only in a perizonium, in Her lap. The fine quality of this work's carving is particularly evident in the drapery of the Virgin's robes, with their thick compressed areas, vertical pleats and carefully observed curving hems forming a stark contrast to the expressively rendered nude body of the fallen Saviour.
A vertical crack running down the left edge. Minimal wear and losses. 48 x 55 x 25 cm.

Certificate

Adolf Mehringer, Salzburg/Munich 3.7.1980.

Provenance

Acquired before 1980, subsequently in a South German private collection.
