Christoph Daniel Schenck

A carved boxwood relief with Christ at the Column by Christoph Daniel Schenck

Boxwood, carved.. This expressive and finely crafted relief shows Christ, bound by the hands, being beaten with scourges, chains and rods by three soldiers in dynamic poses. The backdrop to the scene is made up by architecture and the depiction of the column. The relief, monogrammed "C.D.S." on the left and dated "1680" on the right, is a typical example of the work of the Constance-based wood carver Christoph Daniel Schenck. By way of comparison, see his relief with the depiction of the "Penitent Peter" in private ownership (op. cit., cat. no. 13), also monogrammed and dated 1680. The direct inspiration which this masters' works provided for other contemporary artists can be seen in three small-format wooden reliefs with depictions of scourgings and martyrdoms in the collections of Einsiedeln Monastery and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (op. cit., cat. no. 134, 135 and 164).
The end of the handle of the flail in the upper left corner broken off. Some vertical cracks. Mounted on a wooden panel to add stability. 19.5 x 18 x 1.8 cm.
