A boxwood netsuke of a tengu no tamago. Late 19th century

Signed: Shumin
With one wing and both hands already freed, the Tengu peers grimly out of the cracked egg. The tokin on his head of black wood. The underside of the egg carved with a maple and an oak leaf in relief. The larger himotoshi in the shape of a gingko leaf, the smaller of rounded shape and lined with green-stained ivory.
