A boxwood netsuke of Watanabe no Tsuna. Mid-19th century

Standing next to his horse on an oval base, Watanabe no Tsuna pins down the demon’s right arm which he will sever with one blow.

According to Henri Joly, this depiction of the Rashomon legend comes from the Ehon Shaho Bukuro, in which Tsuna is approached on the Modori Bridge by a beautiful woman who requests him to accompany her to Gojo. Seated on a horse, she transforms into a demon and grabs his scalp - in a flash, Tsuna cuts off her arm with his sword Higekiri.
