An ivory netsuke of a kabuto on plum branches. Second half 19th century

Signed: Teruyuki
A kabuto with a crest (maedate) consisting of antlers and two arrow fletchings rests on two delicately budding plum branches. Below is a half-open fan. Chipped.

The maedate of two arrow fletchings corresponds to the mon of the Kajiwara. Kajiwara Kagesue, one of Yoshitsune's generals, always carried a plum blossom branch in his quiver. As this floral enhancement drew the attention of the Taira troops he managed to break through the enemy lines several times at the Battle of Ikuta, losing his helmet in the process.
Height 1.6 cm; width 3.9 cm

Provenance

Estate of Günter Kauth (1946-2016), Frankfurt am Main
