A wrought iron sugar hammer

L 20.5 cm.
Germany, 18th C., mountings and handle 19th C.

A sugar hammer had two functions: The little axe was used to cut off a piece from the sugar lump or cone, whilst the hammer served to crush the piece into usable granules. The tool could also be fashioned from precious materials, as shown by the Iranian silver sugar hammer in the Islamic Art department of the Berlin State Museums (inv. no. I. 9069).
