A carved Flemish frame with coat of arms

Gilded and silver leafed mirror. The upper section crowned by two lions supporting a central coat of arms, the rest of the frame carved with scrollwork, garlands and draperies. Losses to the polychromy, retouches, minor repairs. H 109.5, W 89.5, frame interior H 81, W 69 cm.
Around 1700, prbably after a design by Jacob or Johannes Lutma (1584 - 1669)

The coat of arms stands for the alliance "Graaf van de Harcourt" and " Graaf van Vlaanderen".

Literature

Cf. Mitchell/Roberts, Frameworks, London 1996, illus. 37, therein described as a "Dutch auricular looking glass frame". As shown in the painting by Emmanuel de Witte, the frame was also used as a mirror frame and not only for a portrait, as one might first expect (from the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, acc.no. 2313 OK).
