Four Italian Neoclassical chairs

Carved and gilded softwood chairs with replaced textile covers and floral carving. Older repairs and retouches. H 90, seat depth 43 cm.
Southern Italy, design attributed to Carlo Vanvitelli (1739 – 1831), late 18th C.

Carlo Vanvitelli (1739 – 1821) was a proponent of the style typical during the transitional period between Baroque and Classicism in Italy. Employed on the construction site of the royal palace of Caserta, he suceeded his father as site director and worked on the decorations of the Old Apartments. These chairs may have been designed during this period.
