A Louis XVI style gaming table

Elegant ebony and oak console table with fluted column supports on casters and Neoclassical ormolu mountings. The top folds out to form a writing surface covered with (replaced) pink velvet. H 74, W when folded 104, D 52 cm.
Paris, attributed to Grohé Frères, third quarter 19th C.

The Grohé brothers, Guillaume (1808 - 1885) and Jean-Michel, originally from the Grand Duchy of Hesse, founded a workshop in Paris around 1827. In 1847, they opened the house Grohé Frères and specialised in finest quality reproductions of furniture from bygone eras. Their clients included King Louis-Philippe, Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, as well as Queen Victoria.
