Probably Maasland 1. Hälfte 14. Jahrhundert

A carved wood figure of the Virgin Enthroned, presumably Maasland, 1st half 14th century

Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With extensive remains of former polychromy. A figure of the Virgin enthroned designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds the Christ Child, who is dressed in a long drapery, standing on Her lap in a striding pose with Her left hand. The work's sculptural quality is dominated by the rendering of the Virgin's cloak, the carefully carved vertical pleats and deep horizontal folds of which form an interesting contrast to the curving drapery of cloth wrapped around Christ.
The Child's right arm and head replaced and loosely attached (see comparison photograph). The Virgin's right hand lost, the toes recarved. With vertical hairline cracks, insect damage and wear throughout. Mounted on a newer wooden plinth. Height 68 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

From a Dutch collection.
