France 2nd half 14th century

A French carved ivory relief with the Crucifixion and the Adoration of the Magi, second half 14th century

With minimal remains of former polychromy. This low relief depicts the scenes of the Crucifixion and the adoration of the Magi alongside each other, separated by arches. The smooth reverse of the piece is uncarved save for a slightly raised border which was used to hold in place a thin layer of wax so the ivory panel could be used as a writing tablet.
Some vertical hairline cracks. Three drilled holes along the upper edge. 9.2 x 4.7 cm.

Provenance

South German private collection.
