Probably Swabia 2nd half 15th century

A carved wood figure of Saint George, presumably Swabia, second half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse smoothed down and the back area hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy and gilding. A figure of the saint with slender proportions standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He is shown wearing armour and a voluminous cloak that falls in deep folds from one shoulder to encompass the figure's back. He would presumably originally have held a lance in the right hand and the identifying attribute of a dragon held on a leash – presumably carved separately – has also not survived, as the earth mound plinth upon which the figure stands is a later replacement.
With a vertical crack running through the head and torso. Wear with losses to the polychromy. Height 99 cm (with plinth).

Provenance

South German private collection.
