Pietro Bernini, circle of

A marble figure of Saint Laurence on the griddle, circle of Pietro Bernini

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With remnants of older partial polychromy.. This medium-sized figure was presumably designed for a chapel or for private devotion and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Laurence. He is shown dressed in a perizonium and laid out on a griddle with coloured flames rising up through its bars. This finely sculpted Mannerist work was recently convincingly attributed to the circle of Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), who was active in Florence, Rome, and Naples.
The left arm and separately attached upper left section of the back of the head missing. Wear with minor losses. With a metal mounting bar attached to the back.

21 x 41 x 14.5 cm..

Certificate

Alfredo Bellandi, Florence 24.01.2018.
