Augsburg 1st quarter 17th century

A small Augsburg carved walnut reliquary altar, first quarter 17th century

Partially pierced dark stained walnut socle with engraved cast silver appliqués. This small travel altar is designed to resemble an architectural facade. The front is decorated with silver relief appliqués showing the resurrected Christ surrounded by angels, winged angel's heads and rosettes. The top of the altar is designed with three plinths for statuettes of Christ on the cross, the Virgin and Saint John. The back of the piece, which can be opened via a sliding panel, conceals a relic wrapped in silver wire, and the cross can also be removed and stored there during travel.
Wear with minor losses to the wood. 29 x 12 x 6.5 cm.
