Michael Zürn the Elder, attributed to

A carved wooden figure of Saint Joachim attributed to Michael Zürn the Elder

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Some patches of presumably older polychromy, extensively overpainted, the gilding presumably reapplied.. A large-format figure of the saint standing in contrapposto. The figure carries no identifying attributes, but is traditionally regarded as a figure of Saint Joachim. The rendering of the hair, facial features, and characteristic drapery in this work are highly comparable to Michael Zürn's John the Baptist in Heiligkreuztal.
The hands loosely attached, some fingers lost. Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a marbled wooden plinth. Height 104 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

South German private collection.
