The "Bronze Horseman" is a monument designed by Etienne Maurice Falconet that was erected in Senate Square by Catherine the Great in 1782 in memory of the Russian victory in the Battle of Poltava. The pedestal on which the large bronze sculpture stands is a huge natural rock monolith, which was transported under great pains to St. Petersburg.
