A Berlin KGM porcelain plaque with a portrait of King Frederick William IV

Impressed eagle mark and S4. With a minor chip to the chest.
Lead-free "Gesundheitsgeschirr" (health porcelain), mid-19th C., after a painting by Franz Krüger.

The painting by Franz Krüger upon which this decor is based, in a Neoclassical tondo form, was made in around 1845. A version of 31 cm in diameter is currently housed in Berlin City Museum.

Lead-free glaze was first produced in France in the late 18th century under the name "Hygiocerames". In 1818, KPM founded a sister firm, "KGM", specialised in the production of this ware based on the banks of the Spree to the west of the Tiergarten.
