An Islamic mortar

Engraved cast bronze, remnants of red pigment, verdigris, traces of sinter. Of octagonal section with protruding base and rim. Decorated with eight niche motifs with birds and calligraphic inscriptions. Severely worn, dents to the edges. H 12.3, D 15.5 cm, includes a pestle with copper damascene, weight with pestle c. 3.5 kg.
