A rare Saxon wedding mortar by Tobias Laybener

Golden brown cast bronze with polished natural patina. Cylindrical mortar on a flaring base with a slightly protruding rim. The smooth walls decorated with several bands of moulding. With two broad banderoles inscribed with the names of the patron, caster, date and location around the base and rim: "Bastyan Pytzsch & Ihrrma rher Zu Gorlitz lyps mich" and "Gossen bey Thobias Laybener cur Zittaw 1577". With two delicate faceted handles. The base slightly concave due to usage, with verdigris to the interior. H 16.7, D 13.2 cm, weight c. 4.6 kg.
