An Ottoman travel cutlery set

Comprising a knife and two-pronged fork in a case with a chain strap. The handles and case finely decorated with Mauresque engravings and niello. L of knife 19; of case 24 cm,
Unmarked, Turkey, first half 18th C.

The form and decor of this set correspond almost exactly to a small group of cutlery items thought to have been produced by a Greek goldsmith for the Greek Christian community in Constantinople. The majority of the pieces bear inscriptions with the names of their owners and dates from the first half of the 18th century.
