A pair of large Meissen porcelain dishes with fantastic beasts

Decorated with fanciful animal motifs in purple on landscape islands surrounded by Oriental flowers. The borders with spiralling ribbons. Blue crossed swords mark, dreher's marks 20 and 21, incised /// in the basal rings. With minor wear to the glaze and gilding. D 33.8 and 34.2 cm.
Around 1745, decor after Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck.

The two bowls have the same decoration as the known and published pieces with the additional coat-of-arms of Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen, Minister of the Electorate of Hanover, which he received as a gift from the Saxon King August III in 1745. It is possible that these two bowls were the first versions of the service before the drawing of the coat-of-arms arrived in the manufactory.

Provenance

Private collection, Palatinate.
