A Meissen porcelain rhinosceros

Depicting a white rhinosceros and an elegantly dressed man holding a vessel on an ormolu plinth with a palm tree. Blue crossed swords mark under the belly of the rhinosceros. The animal's ears reattached. H 25, W 33.5, D 21.3 cm.
The porcelain mid-18th / 19th C., modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler between 1737 and 1755, the gilt bronze mountings attributed to Paris, mid-18th C.

The figure in Pietsch, Die Arbeitsberichte des Meissener Porzellanmodelleurs Johann Joachim Kaendler 1706 - 1775, Leipzig 2002, p. 46, April 1737: "ein neues Croppgen aufs Waaren Lager angefangen, wie eine Vornehme dame auf einem Visiten Stuhl sitzet und hat eine Coffe dasse in der rechten Hand die lincke aber küßt eine Wohl gebutzte Mannes Persohn, hinter dem Frauenzimmer stehe ein Mohr mit Einem Credenz Teller welcher Serviret. Weiln solches aber sehr viel Mühe hat ist noch was in künfftigen Monath davon zu fertigen übrig blieben." Here the man only holds the vessel originally presented on a platter, and is thus a slight reduction of a group consisting of numerous figures.
