A terracotta statuette of a cardinal

Depicting a figure standing in contrapposto on an earth mound base, pointing towards himself with one hand, the extended right hand lost. He wears an ermine cape over a red cloak and a breastplate over a gold trimmed blue tunic. Minor retouches to the polychromy. H 17.6 cm.
French or Spanish, mid- to third quarter 17th C.

This painted and gilt terracotta statue probably depicts a cardinal and general, as the combination of ermine cape, armour and neck bands suggests. A possible candidate for the depicted would be Ferdinand of Spain (1609 or 1610 - 1641), cardinal since 1619 and general in the Thirty Years' War.
