An extremely rare pair of Würzburg chased ormolu twin-branch wall lights

Two-flame ormolu wall lights cast in several parts and screw-mounted. The curved branches issuing from rocaille cartouche backs. H 20.5, W 33.5 cm
Probably workshop of Johann Georg Oegg, second quarter 18th century.

Tyrolean-born Johann Georg Oegg (1703 - 1782) was, like his ancestors, a trained blacksmith who also learned the art of locksmithing. 1733 Prince-Bishop Karl Friedrich von Schönborn appointed him to the Würzburg court, no doubt on the recommendation of the famous Prince Eugene of Savoy, for whom he had already worked after his apprenticeship and journeyman's period. Many of the furnishings in the Würzburg Residence are the creations of Oegg, who was not only exceptionally talented as a craftsman but also as an artist. In 1952, a monument was erected in Würzburg's Hofgarten for the important artisan.
