A bronze figure of Louis XIV riding into battle

Finely chased burnished bronze figure on a black marble and red granite base with ormolu appliques. H 82, W base 49.5, D 23.5 cm
Paris, model by Pierre Cartelier (1757 - 1831) and Petitot (1757 - 1831), cast mid-19th C.

When visiting the Château de Versailles, it is impossible to overlook the original larger-than-life statue: It stands in the Place d'Armes, directly in front of the château gates. The original design for "Le Roi Louis XIV à cheval, partant au combat" was by Pierre Cartellier (1757 - 1831). When he died in 1831, only the horse was finished, originally designed for an equestrian statue of Louis XV commissioned by King Louis XVIII in 1816 for the Place de la Concorde in Paris and ultimately not executed. Under Louis Philippe, the completion of the monument was finally pushed forward. The rider was the work of Louis Petitot (1794 - 1862), Cartelier's son-in-law. The impressive bronze sculpture was cast by Charles Crozatier in 1838. It was followed by several smaller casts, one of which is offered here, in a sumptuous version on a fine marble and granite pedestal.
