Alpenländisch oder Oberrhein around 1360/1370

A carved wood Corpus Christi, Alpine or Upper Rhine Region, around 1360/1370

Presumably pinewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. An impressive torso designed for a lowered viewpoint. This slightly under lifesized work makes a strong impact on the viewer despite - or perhaps because of - its fragmentary state. The chest is accentuated by the simple, stylised depiction of the ribs, and the facial features also display an archaic quality. The drapery of the perizonium allows us to date the figure to the 14th century, and its design indicates an origin in the Alpine Foothills of Switzerland or the Upper Rhine Region.
With spaces for the (missing) arms on the back of the shoulders. The back of the head and the crown of thorns covered with canvas. A vertical crack through the centre. Restored in 2020. Height 137 cm.
