Nottingham early 15th century

An Alabaster high-relief of Christ Carrying the Cross, Nottingham, early 15th century

Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened, with minimal remains of former polychromy. This high relief presumably derives from a series depicting the Passion of Christ. It shows Jesus facing left carrying the Cross as he is pulled forwards on a rope by a soldier with a cloth slung around his hips. The man depicted between the two figures could be interpreted as Saint John. Despite the fragmentary nature of the piece, it remains recognisable as a fine quality and characteristic example of the kind of works produced in the English workshops of the early 15th century.
Losses to the left and upper edges. The tip of the Cross and the horizontal beam lost. The freestanding leg of the soldier with two cracks to the upper thigh and ankle. Wear throughout. 31.5 x 20 x 4.5 cm.

Provenance
