Spain around 1420/1430

A carved wood Corpus Christi, Spain, around 1420/1430

Presumably walnut, carved in the round, the reverse slightly flattened. The arms separately attached. The polychromy presumably original, slightly retouched in areas. A figure of Christ on the Cross designed for a lowered viewpoint. He is depicted with arms outstretched and slightly raised and with His feet crossed in the "three nail" crucifixion type. His head, adorned with the Crown of Thorns, is leant to one side in death and His mouth slightly opened. His body is depicted with elongated proportions, dressed in a perizonium, and rendered realistically but in a reduced fashion that only serves to heighten the expressive quality of the work. The piece can be compared to Spanish painting and sculpture of the first half of the 15th century.
With vertical hairline cracks and minor wear throughout. Height 113 cm, width of arms 89 cm.
