A carved wood Pietà group, Central Rhine Region, second half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out up to the shoulders. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. A devotional image designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint, depicting the Virgin seated on a bench holding the body of Her dead Son facing towards the beholder in Her lap. The expressive figure displays particularly fine carving, especially in the Virgin's robes.
A vertical crack to the left. Wear with minor losses to the polychromy. The lower half of the back covered with canvas. Mounted on a shallow wooden plinth. Height 49.5 cm (without plinth).
