A carved wood figure of Saint John the Evangelist by Hans Klocker and workshop

Carved in the round. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He is depicted in his traditional youthful and beardless guise, holding a book as an additional identifying attribute. The work's sculptural volume is emphasised especially by the design of the cloak worn around the shoulders, which encompasses the figure with a slender strip of fabric at the front and deeply carved hollow folds on either side. The characteristic rendering, especially of the hair and facial features, allows the work to be attributed to the South Tyrolese sculptor Hans Klocker and his workshop, with a possible date of around 1480.
The separately attached hands lost. Short vertical cracks to the sleeves below the book and to the left foot, with a small wedge-shaped repair below in the plinth. Minor wear throughout. Height 109 cm.
