Probably Central Germany second half 15th century

A carved wood Anna Selbdritt group, presumably Central German, second half 15th century

Carved in the round, the reverse of the throne hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Depicting the matronly Saint Anne holding the diminutive, crowned and praying figure of her daughter Mary in her left hand and the nude figure of Christ, turned towards the beholder, in her right.
The Child's left arm, right hand and right foot lost. Round cracks with losses to the plinth, backed with canvas. The back of the throne mounted with a wooden splat to stabilise it. Height 72 cm.

Provenance

Acquired in 1960, presumably outside of a Lempertz Cologne auction. Subsequently in a West German private collection.
