A carved wooden figure of a holy Abbot, presumably Bavaria or Tyrol, around 1480/1490

Carved in the round. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of a saint with a tonsure in monk's robes designed for a frontal viewpoint. The figure is depicted holding a book in his right hand and - although the staff in his left hand is probably a replacement - is thought to depict an abbot. The facial features and hair of the figure are rendered in an especially fine and detailed manner, corresponding to the artfully arranged and well carved drapery of the robe with its angular and rounded folds.
The left hand and staff replaced. Thin vertical cracks to the front. Extensive losses to the plinth. Minor wear throughout. Height 55 cm (without staff).
