Burgundy around 1500

A Burgundian carved wood figure of Saint Quirinus of Neuss, around 1500

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. Presumably original older polychromy. A figure of the saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. His knightly armour, lance and shield with nine spheres allow the figure to be identified as Quirinus of Neuss. Standing in a pronounced contrapposto, the figure is characterised by the attention to detail in the depiction of the armour and the feathered beret, as well as the finely carved facial features and hair, and the skilfully rendered folds of the cloak.
A hairline crack to the cheek. The front edge of the plinth an addition. Woodworm damage to the reverse. The lance loosely attached. Minor wear throughout. Height (with lance) 41 cm.
