Mechelen around 1500/1510

A figure of the Virgin and Child, Mechelen, around 1500/10

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Presumably with the original polychromy and gilding. A figure designed for a frontal viewpoint depicting the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose. She holds the Christ Child, shown with a book, over Her right hip and Her left hand is held aloft in a blessing. The fine quality of the carving is particularly evident in the facial features and reveals this work as a characteristic product of the Mechelen school, an effect additionally emphasised by the polychromy. The back of the piece is also emblazoned with the city mark of Mechelen, as well as a letter "R" on the lower edge.
With minor wear to the polychromy and a restoration to the front left of the plinth, otherwise in good condition. With a modern dowel attached to the underside, includes a modern socle. Height 36.5 cm.
