Spain or Portugal 17th century

A 17th century Iberian carved wooden figure of St. Apollonia

Wood, caved in the round, the polychromy presumably original. Standing figure of the saint on a moulded plinth. She holds her (replaced) attribute - a tooth in pliers - in her left hand and would presumably have originally held a palm frond in her right. The figure is thought to originate from Spain or Portugal due to the characteristic floral pattern and partial gilding used in the polychromy.
The separately worked head is partially mobile. Minor wear throughout. One handle of the pliers missing. Height 32 cm.

Provenance

Acquired from Lempertz aside from an auction in 1969. - Subsequently in a private collection in Cologne.
