Aeneas and Anchises

Fragment of an alabaster group. Older restorations/fillings to the shoulder of Anchises and centre of his torso, chips throughout. H 22.3, H with stand 30.4 cm.
Copy of an original from Mechelen/ Malines, late 16th / early 17th C.

This image is based on ancient poetic works. Homer, and later Vergil (2nd book of Aeneid), tell of how Aeneas carried his father Anchises, King of Dardania, out of the burning city of Troy.
