A brass sundial and compass in the original leather case

Paris, attributed to Jacques-Nicolas Baradelle, firt half 18th C.

Most horizontal sundials with a fixed gnomon only show the time correctly in the latitude for which they are designed. With this type of sundial, however, the shadow-casting part of the gnomon is rotatable so that its inclination can be varied. In addition, the compass is surrounded by four separate hour scales suitable for use at different latitudes. The underside of the dial is engraved with a table showing the latitudes of 25 cities in various European countries.
