A Dutch tapestry depicting Narcissus and Echo

Woven in wool and silk, textile backing. A broad tapestry showing a landscape view with large architectural ruins and a central depiction of Narcissus gazing at his reflection in a well. Unusually decorated borders with brackets supporting Turkish figures and floral swags to the upper and lower sections. Backed, older repairs, borders reattached, vertically cut and shut. 222 x 399 cm.
Attributed to an Amsterdam workshop, 1st quarter 18th C.

Narcissus fascinated by his own reflection has been a popular artistic motif since antiquity. Here, two elements from the story are depicted taking place simultaneously in a park landscape with classical architecture: Narcissus crassly rejecting the advances of the nymph Echo, and the Godess Nemesis punishing him by causing him to fall in love with himself through a fateful glance into a still pool of water.
