A pewter figure of a miner with an oil lamp

H 34.2, D base 18.4 cm.
Johanngeorgenstadt, master J. Unger, active c. 1685.

In 1654, the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I founded a new town in the Saxon Erzgebirge, to which he gave his own name. A few years later, in 1662, a mining office was established there that was responsible for over 100 mines. Besides coal, tin and silver were also mined. The pewter figure presented here possibly represents an underclimber, as he has also come down to us from the series of engravings by Christoph Weigel.
